CQ Announces 2010 Hall of Fame Inductees

CQ magazine today announced its 2010 Hall of Fame inductees, welcoming 15 new members into the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame and two new members each into the CQ DX Hall of Fame and the CQ Contest Hall of Fame. The CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame honors those individuals -- whether licensed hams or not -- who have made significant contributions to Amateur Radio, as well as those amateurs who have made significant contributions either to Amateur Radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet.

The 2010 inductees (listed alphabetically) are:

  • Chester Buchanan, W3DZZ (SK) -- Developer of the W3DZZ triband trap beam that was very popular with hams in the 1950s and '60s.
  • Calvin Cotner, K4JSI -- Retired Director of Operations for Comsat World Systems. In 2009, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awarded him the 2009 Aerospace Communications Award for “technical and strategic leadership” in international cooperation in satellite communications from the earliest days to the present.
  • Forrest Dana, 4AGR -- Early Army Amateur Radio System member, who, together with Ralph Hollis, 4AFC, provided critical communications after the 1928 Caribbean hurricane, maintaining a link with the War Department and providing information that brought help from the Army and the Red Cross (2010 marks the 85th anniversary of AARS, the predecessor of MARS).
  • Gene Harlan, WB9MMM (SK) -- Amateur Radio magazine publisher. Editor and Publisher of ATV Quarterly and founder of Cyberham magazine.
  • George Hart, W1NJM -- Former ARRL Communications Manager; chief developer of the National Traffic System. In 2009, the ARRL introduced the George Hart Distinguished Service Award, given to an ARRL member whose service to the League’s Field Organization is of the most exemplary nature
  • Ralph Hollis, 4AFC -- Early Army Amateur Radio System member, who, together with Forrest Dana, 4AGR, provided critical communications after the 1928 Caribbean hurricane, maintaining a link with the War Department and providing information that brought help from the Army and the Red Cross (2010 marks the 85th anniversary of AARS, the predecessor of MARS).
  • Dave Ingram, K4TWJ (SK) -- Prolific ham radio author, Ingram was a Contributing Editor for CQ magazine, 1982-2010. He covered a wide variety of topics, and transmitting through the printed word, his unquenchable enthusiasm for ham radio was always evident.
  • Paul Kangas, W4LAA -- Business news anchor on PBS for 30 years, Kangas is known as the “Walter Cronkite of business news.”
  • Dr Arnall Patz, ex-WA3EVC (SK) -- Ophthalmologist who discovered and eliminated a major cause of blindness in premature babies.
  • Howard Schmidt, W7HAS -- White House Cyber-Security Coordinator.
  • Bill Schneider, K2TT – Chairman of the Defense Science Board, an independent federal committee advising the Secretary of Defense.
  • Jim Smith, VK9NS (SK) -- Noted DXer and DXpeditioner, Smith was an author and longtime member of the CQ DX Hall of Fame.
  • George Smith, AA2EJ -- Inventor of the CCD (charge-coupled device) sensor that revolutionized digital imaging. He was the co-recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics.
  • Mark Stenning, AA1AC -- Chief Executive Officer of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.
  • George Wilson, W4OYI (SK) -- ARRL President from 1992-95, Wilson led ARRL portion of effort to create vanity call sign program. He was named ARRL President Emeritus in 1995.

CQ Contest and DX Halls of Fame

 The CQ Contest and DX Halls of Fame honor those amateurs who not only excel in personal performance in these major areas of Amateur Radio, but who also “give back” to the hobby in outstanding ways.

The 2010 inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame are:

  • Don Hill, AA5AU -- A major promoter of RTTY contesting, Hill is known among contesters as “the RTTY Elmer.” He is also a regular contributor on RTTY contesting to NCJ, the National Contest Journal.
  • Larry Weaver, N6TW -- A longtime member of the CQ World Wide Contest Committee, Weaver developed some of the log-checking software used today in scoring the CQWW and other contests. He is also a past president of the Southern California DX Club and a past Chairman of the International DX Convention held each year in Visalia, California.

The 2010 inductees to the CQ DX Hall of Fame are:

  • Robert Locher, W9KNI -- An accomplished DXer, Locher is best known as an author and mentor on effective DXing. His book, The Complete DXer, is the best-selling DX book ever published, and his newest book, A Year of DX, chronicles his effort to win the 2008 CQ DX Marathon.
  • Lynn Lamb, W4NL -- A co-founder of the Southeastern DX and Contesting Organization (SEDCO) that sponsors an annual convention featuring well-known speakers on DXing and contesting. He also writes regularly for DX magazine and is a leading proponent of improved DXing etiquette.

Formal inductions to the CQ Contest and DX Halls of Fame are scheduled for the contest and DX dinners, respectively, at the Dayton Hamvention®.
