I have been studying how the sun behaves. Most of it makes sense but I have not been able to find information on the effect of high energy electrons and protons on amateur satellites. I do understand that some satellites are shut down at times due to buildup of charges. What are the levels of electrons or protons that would cause an amateur satellite to need to shut down? Is there some reason that amateur satellites do not need to shut down? |

My research suggests that amateur satellites typically pass below the Van Allen Belts where radiation is unusually high. The location of these belts is not clearly defined. |
