Equipment Advice for beginners.

Greetings all, I am new and have begun studying for my Technician License. Once I test and pass I am planning to purchase 5 handheld radios to send and receive voice. I will help the other 4 persons study for their exams, once all 5 of us are licensed we will be located within 150 miles of one another. Question: Advice on what make and model of radios to buy? 150 miles is an unreasonable distance to expect reliable communications with handheld radios. Radio signals don't go through hills. Handheld radios are typically limited to line of sight distances. Repeaters can be used to extend the range, but to get that sort of coverage we are looking at a repeater height of 10,800 feet (smooth earth model approximation). FCC rules do allow linked repeaters to cover a large area, but that is a big undertaking for something that may not be reliable in an emergency. Zak Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
