Hello!

I'm a new member, aiming for an October Technician test.

I'd like to get started with a low investment rig, then source more deliberately after learning the fundamentals.

Is this Ham Radio Starter Kit worth the $350 it costs?

Will it provide a good starter experience?

It's an appealing option to get started. Having something up front to configure and explore while studying will help a lot, but I'm not prepared to think about what I'll want in the future, after earning my General.

Thank you!

VHF/UHF FM is almost exclusively local communications. I suggest contacting a local amateur club or your section manager for area specific advice.

If you do have an active population of hams on VHF/UHF the idea of getting a base station with a properly mounted antenna is a good one. HTs are just too limited for many situations.
