Picking up ISS from Alaska

I am a new operator and was curious if anyone in Alaska, in particular, the South Central / Gulf Coast area has had any luck picking up the International Space Station (ISS)? I have seen videos of people picking it up with a handheld, but I haven't had much luck. Of course, I could be doing a myriad of things wrong; incorrect mode, not pointing accurately, or assuming they are constantly transmitting. Any info, advise, stories would be greatly appreciated.
