I recently purchased a Yaesu FT-2900R. It has an external speaker output on the back. I attempted to plug a headphone into said port and get a hum all the time, whether receiving or not. I don't get this hum from the internal speaker, so I assume my headphone is not correct in some way, but I am wondering if this assumption is correct, or if my radio is defective in some way. Does anyone have any experience plugging a headphone into the external speaker jack of a Yaesu radio? Is there a certain headphone that works? Should I hear hum when not receiving? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike |

Plugging headphones in a speaker jack is a bad idea--you could easily damage your hearing and the headphones with power needed to drive a speaker. You are hearing hum because the headphones are too sensitive to be driven by a typical speaker output. You need to attenuate the signal from the speaker jack. http://sound.westhost.com/project100.htm Here is a simple project to do that. Zack Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
