For my first rig setup I am going to use RG8. My question should I go with 240UF or 400UF? The 400 is twice as expensive. Thank you. KG5FHM |

I used RG-8X with my first rig--to feed a 10 meter dipole--worked great for 10M CW--helped a lot of hams finally work Hawaii for WAS. Are you doing to do something similar for your first rig? A more expensive cable can be worthwhile if you need lower loss for your application. Hams will use lower loss cables at VHF/UHF, as well as for long cable runs. In theory, it makes sense to keep the line loss as low as possible. In practice, there are more important concerns, such as lightning protection. Similarly, a longer cable run to get your antenna higher or farther away from noisy household electrical devices will often work better in practice than a short cable. Losing a dB on transmit can be a good tradeoff if you pick up 10 dB on receive. Zack W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
